An Evening to Remember
September 26, 2012

Imagine pulling off the “Surprise of a Lifetime” in honor of the career of our leader and our friend, Barry Gump. Over 250 Andy Gump Team Members and their guests, sanitation industry leaders from across the U.S., family and friends surprised Barry at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library on Wednesday, September 26th, 2012 in Simi Valley to share our appreciation for Barry’s vision that has touched our lives in so many ways. |
Nancy moderated the celebration, as Barry’s sister, Cherilyn, shared stories from their childhood, Ang Pascolla shared memories of their many adventures as neighbors and friends for over 40 years, Todd Hilde spoke of the contributions Barry has made to the sanitation industry, Lee Sola shared travel experiences with Barry and Pati and sanitation industry friends across the globe and Ron Inman described Barry’s “always there to lend a helping hand” approach to life. Highlights of the evening were a video from Lothar Vermillion, a colleague from Germany and a video by Congressman Buck McKeon who described the very special gifts that Barry has shared with everyone who knows him. Tony Watson represented the Andy Gump Team in recognizing all that Barry has meant to us over his 48 year career at Andy Gump and presented a plaque that describes Barry as “A Man of Vision”.

While Nancy surprised Barry with a sculpture by Shalah Perkins depicting the three generations of the Gump family, Barry also surprised Nancy with a symbolic “turning over the reins” and “passing of the baton” in day to day management of Andy Gump as well as another sculpture by Shalah called “I Can Do It, Daddy”.
Everyone had an opportunity to tour the Presidential Library, share a delicious dinner, watch a slideshow of Andy Gump memories and conclude the evening with dessert in the Air Force One Pavilion where Nancy and Pati presented Barry with a new Ford Flex with a custom eagle and American flag decal.
Thanks for the memories, Barry, Pati & Nancy!
| Martin Naranjo Promoted to Fontana Facility Manager |
M
artin Naranjo ascended to a new level of leadership, rising through the ranks at our Orange then Fontana facility, now as Facility Manager. Martin joined Andy Gump in 2003 in a Sanitation Prep position, steadily climbing to a Class B Driver position, then Sanitation Supervisor. Martin’s quiet yet determined leadership skills, commitment to high quality service and strong work ethic has earned Martin the respect of his team, his peers and our customers.
Congratulations also to Bud Kurtz, who assumed the role of Fontana Sanitation Supervisor. Martin and Bud plan to foster a stronger collaboration between facilities, especially the North Hollywood Team as they work together to improve coordination and maintenance of our Special Event inventory.
Best Wishes, Martin and Bud, for continued success in your new roles!

Lennar Homes – Premier Customer...Premier Service… Winning Relationship
In July 2011, Thomas Field, Sales Manager, received a call from Al Lee, Regional Manager for Lennar Homes, Santa Clarita. Al remembered receiving superior service from a guy named “Barry” at Andy Gump twenty years ago and wondered if he was around. Al was not satisfied with his current temporary site services provider and was considering a change. Thomas, Tony and Barry met with Al and negotiated some very aggressive multiple product pricing and we won the bid to provide sanitation, fencing, temporary power and container services at all Lennar jobs in the Santa Clarita valley. We figured with all locations within a few miles of our Ruether Ave. yard, we would try it.
Leo Osornia, John Flores and Kyle Muir and their teams have been providing PREMIER service for the past several months and recent quality visits with the superintendents by Thomas and Tony revealed they could not be happier with our service. Michael Sandoval reported specific job costs for the sanitation route via his Smartphone which revealed that the tract work is cost effective! A WIN for all

Shop Mechanics – Unsung Heroes…Every Day
I
magine being responsible for keeping 130 trucks on the road and a $500,000 vehicle maintenance and repair budget. Sammy Guillen and his team of top notch mechanics face that challenge everyday!
Sergio Rodriguez and Juan Vasquez serve the North Hollywood fleet, including over 100 trailers. Edger Martinez and Rudy Saavedra serve the fleets for Santa Clarita, Bakersfield and Lancaster while Jaime Avellaneda maintains the Fontana fleet of over 25 vehicles and numerous trailers housed there.
We could not “do what we do” without our dedicated Shop Team keeping our trucks safe and “on the road”. Thank you, Sammy, Sergio, Juan, Edger, Rudy and Jaime, for your diligent efforts to respond to our vehicle needs quickly and efficiently.

Barry’s Blog
There is no better way to spend my day than in a truck with our team. A trip to RVIA gave me the opportunity to join Eduardo Rivera to pick up 10 new VIP units from Nu-Concepts and help with the delivery to the Pomona Fairgrounds. Eduardo sets a terrific example, keeping his truck immaculate, and enthusiastically serving our customers every day. I look forward to riding along with many of you in the near future.
